Nutrition and Hydration Week June 14th-20th 2021
Did you know that about 700 million people in the world are undernourished? Moreover, more than 20% of children worldwide are stunted due to chronic malnutrition.
Malnutrition is a world health crisis that needs to be addressed immediately. Over the years, several nonprofits have attempted to fight malnutrition and ensure that people worldwide get ample amounts of food and nutrition.
Nutrition and Hydration Week will be observed globally from June 14 to June 20 to increase the engagement, activity, and participation of people in the fight against malnutrition.
What Is Nutrition and Hydration Week?
Nutrition and Hydration Week has two areas of focus. Firstly, it highlights and celebrates the developments in the provision of nutrition and hydration on a national and global level. Secondly, it identifies the current areas of nutrition and hydration that need to be addressed.
Over the recent years, Nutrition and Hydration Week has become a global event. Nonprofits and charity organizations working towards fighting malnutrition come together to host events, raise funds, and increase awareness about nutrition and hydration.
Nutrition and Hydration week aims at promoting:
- Key characteristics of proper nutritional care
- Minimum standards for good nutrition
- Nutrition Advocates for all health and social care settings
- Sharing adequate nutrition and hydration practices
- Enabling education and professional development around nutrition and hydration
How Malnutrition Impacts the World?
Children of today are the future of tomorrow. And with one in every four children being stunted, the future generation is at risk of underdevelopment, underperformance, and underachievement. When these children grow up into adults, their inability to perform well can affect their ability to earn. This can affect their socioeconomic status and overall quality of life.
What Can You Do to Fight Malnutrition?
You can take up a fight against malnutrition, even if you’re alone. Here are three ways anyone can get involved in the fight against malnutrition.
On a Family Level
First, see if anyone is malnourished in your family, especially newborn babies and toddlers. Please note that although the risk of malnutrition is high with poverty, children in well-to-do families can also be undernourished. See if anyone in your circle shows signs of malnutrition and educate them about the importance of right nutrition and hydration.
On a Local Level
If you want to scale up your efforts, you can help people on a local level. You can start with households in your locality and see if any children are suffering from malnutrition. Slowly, you can move to other localities and areas. At this level, you can also build a team of people with the same initiative.
On a National Level
If you want to fight malnutrition on a national or international level, you can join a nonprofit organization that fights hunger. Some charities that fight hunger and malnutrition in the US are Action Against Hunger and Feeding America.
Final Thoughts
The rate of malnutrition has reduced significantly over the past few decades, thanks to the collective efforts of governments and nonprofits. Nutrition and Hydration Week is an annual celebration that focuses on highlighting these efforts and strengthening the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
